Source Types (Authority Ladder):
- Primary Sources – Original works, classical texts (Internet Archive, Project Gutenberg). Given highest authority.
- Secondary Sources – Scholarly editions, university presses, annotated translations. Trusted but not original.
- Later Attributions – Modern quote compilations (e.g., '100 Great Quotes by X'), Wikiquote. These may accurately reproduce a quote but are not the original source.
- Verified source (green) – Primary/secondary source with 95%+ text match
- Later attribution (yellow) – Compilation source regardless of match score. The text may match, but the source is a modern collection, not the original work.
- Unverified (yellow) – Primary/secondary source with 70–94% match; may need manual review
- Rejected (red) – Below 70% match; source uncertain
- Not Found – No matching source located in our providers
You can filter and sort quotes by veridicality score in our Quote Finder using the Veridicality dropdown.
You can also open any author profile and jump directly to their quote list, or click the "More Quotes by ..." button on a quote page.
On each author page you can also browse their quotes and explore related topics. If you spot an error or missing detail, use the Report mistakes button on the author page (or contact us) and we'll take a look.
